Hospitalization

Support Through Your Hospitalization

You may be wondering how your hospitalization might impact your relationships, academics, housing, and remaining time at the University. The Care and Wellness Consultants, your academic dean or advisor, Clinical Case Managers, and your hospital treatment team are here to help you navigate these questions. The answers are different for each individual.

Most students remain enrolled at the University with little interruption to their classes. Others may choose to take a health withdrawal and return home for a semester or two of recovery. Care and Wellness Consultants routinely visit students who are hospitalized for mental health reasons and provide initial notification of your hospital absence to your academic dean.

Psychiatric Hospitalizations

Psychiatric hospitalizations can feel stressful to navigate. First and foremost, you are not alone in experiencing a psychiatric hospitalization. Care and Wellness Consultants are here to help navigate decisions both during and after your psychiatric hospitalization.

While hospitalized, it is helpful to sign a release of information that allows hospital staff to contact the Center for Student Support and Care. This allows the Care and Wellness Consultant to know about your hospitalization and work with your faculty regarding your absences while hospitalized. While the Center for Student Support and Care does not provide therapy, they can provide care coordination to help you find a provider on or off campus. Your Care and Wellness Consultant will visit you during your hospitalization to go over your options and answer any questions you may have.

Physical Health Hospitalizations

University Health Services (UHS) can also partner with you if you’ve been hospitalized for a medical condition to work through personal or academic concerns. UHS also has a case manager who can work with you and your provider team to offer support and resources.

Returning To Campus

Care and Wellness Consultants coordinate with your providers what support you need post-hospitalization and make connections both on and off campus. Your Care and Wellness Consultant can provide assistance and advocacy while working on your return to classes.

As part of your return to campus please contact your Care and Wellness Consultant to schedule a meeting upon discharge. If you, your family or one of your hospital care team have questions, please contact the Center for Student Support and Care at  care@nd.edu or 574-631-7833.
